In fine art, the term ‘pen and ink’ denotes a drawing technique involving the use of black and other coloured inks which are applied to a support (generally paper) with either a dip pen or a reservoir pen.
Drawing with pen and ink allows the artist to create strong areas of contrast.
Most ink drawings are completed using black inks on white surfaces which leads to heavy contrast in value.
Many artists choose to exploit this contrast. Others, however find it difficult to create gradations in value for this reason.
